Born on June 22, 1972, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi MGH, CBS attended Sawagonogo High School, where he excelled in his secondary education. In 1990, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.

He is currently the leader of the minority in the Kenyan Parliament and a member of parliament for Siaya County's Ugunja constituency.
In the wake of Kenya's president's recent nomination of cabinet secretaries, he was proposed to be the Cabinet Secretary for Energy, replacing Davis Chirchir, who was proposed to assume Kipchumba Murkomen's position as CS for Roads.
