The vendor, identified by witnesses as James Mwangi, was doing his usual business near Tom Mboya Street, close to the edges of the protest crowd. Eyewitnesses state that Mwangi was not part of the demonstration but became caught in the chaos that erupted when police began dispersing crowds with tear gas and live ammunition.
“He was just selling
masks like he does every day,” said Ruth Wanjiru, a fellow hawker. “The police
started shooting, and I saw him fall after a loud bang.”
Witnesses claim that the
shot was fired at random as police moved in to break up the crowd, which had
grown as infiltrators began throwing stones and looting nearby shops.
